Bonding 20x4 config

I have the cmts ubr10k with 20x20 cards and i want to config with 20ds and 4us Bonding.can you post any config with 20x4 completly with wideband and load-balance config

Couple of things to be aware

Couple of things to be aware of :

You can do 20 DS bonding with this card, but it is wasteful in terms of upstream channels. You will end up with 12 x US channels which are stranded / can no longer be used.

If you need to avoid stranding the US channels like that, you would be better off going for 12 DS bonding.

To do > 16 channels down, you need IOS SCH2 or later

i want to configure 2 MAC domains with 20 ds

20x4 bonding works

I've got three Fiber-Nodes (Three MAC-Domains) with 20x6 bonding up and running with each MC20x20v card. Thus I only waste two upstream connectors per card.
Five Fiber-Nodes (also Three MAC-Domains) with 20x4 Bonding will work as well wasting no upstream connector.

The whole configuration is a bit unusual because you are mixing three MAC-Domains within a single Downstream-RF-Domain.

MAC-Domain 1 contains:
downstream controller0:0-3 for primaries and
controllers 1:0-3, 2:0-3, 3:0-3, and 4:0-3 for secondaries
upstream connectors 0-5 for the 1st 20x6 (repectively 0-7 for 1st & 2nd 20x4)

MAC-Domain 2 contains:
downstream controller1:0-3 for primaries and
controllers 0:0-3, 2:0-3, 3:0-3, and 4:0-3 for secondaries
upstream connectors 6-11 for the 2nd 20x6 (repectively 8-15 for3rd & 4th 20x4)

MAC-Domain 3 contains:
downstream controller2:0-3 for primaries and
controllers 0:0-3, 1:0-3, 3:0-3, and 4:0-3 for secondaries
upstream connectors 12-17 for the thrid 20x6 (repectively 16-19 for 5th 20x4)

Also WB-Configurations is a bit unusual, because it really does NOT matter which MAC-Domain a WB-Interface is configured on. The CMTS simply picks a matching one.
Example: on MAC-Domain 1 I configure all 4x and 8x bonding WB-Interfaces
on MAC-Domain 2 I configure all 16x and the single 20x bonding WB-Interface
on MAC-Domain 3 I configure WB-Interfaces allocated for provisioned attribute masks
on MAC-Domain 4&5 I configure DS-resiliency WB-Interfaces (even though I don't use these MAC-Domains!)

This way each Linecard is maxed out regarding available bandwidth. 960Mbps downstream and 155Mbps upstream per segment.

Yes you can do this, but it often results in very slow booting modems (especially new ones)

There are many invalid DS/US combinations the modem has to work through

We've done extensive tests,

We've done extensive tests, because this was our fear as well.
But it seems that booting times are pretty much unaffected compared to a normal configuration.
The worst booting time we saw was five minutes. But this kind of modem was slow anyways under all circumstances.

we don't use Loadbalancing. The CMTS pretty much distributes the modems by default.

I used to run a system that the owner refused to tool to narrowcast. We had 4 mac domains sharing a single downstream rf domain, done six times throughout the system. Some modems took as many as four hours to come online. We were running 4x8 (x4) where all 4 8dssg's shared a single 32ds rf domain.

In order to get around it, I had to set up a "modem prep" bench, and dictate what modems went to what area.
I set up four sections, one per 8ds rf range, narrowcasted directly off of the back of our testing cmts so that the modems could only see 8 ds, then rebooted the modems four times so they were "locked in" to those downstream carriers (they typically remember the last three primary downstreams they locked on to).
That solved the problem, but god was it awful and bass-ackward engineered. Modem ranging times dropped to two minutes or less from that point forward, thankfully.

The other piece was to set only two primary downstreams per 8dssg rather than all 8ds being primaries like you would do in a narrowcast scenario.

Was operating a BSR64K on an SRM4.

If you're running (4+4+4)x20, you could possibly be in a better position than I was. I was running (4x8)+(4x8)+(4x8)+(4x8) on shared 32ds. Hell I tell you. Hell.

In order to improve ranging times one could reduce primary channels per MAC-Domain.
Maybe even only one primary per MAC-Domain.
But I think, this wouldn't be an option for Premto because of the high amount of 2.0 modems.

Another benefit might be slightly improved net throughput.

Can you reduce the amount of primary channels to max. 4 per MAC-Domain?

From my experience it is really not needed to make all channels primary, because D2.0 would not eat up all bandwidth in your RF-domain.
And even if D2.0 bandwidth would be insufficient, I would take the chance to ship out a new D3.0 modem to the complaining customer.

Another option could be to provision a scan-list of frequencies via docsisfile to the affected modems before the switchover to the new CMTS.

yes i have 500 modems per linecard and i have connected all rf channels on splitter together and i put on 1 transmiter.the problem is the 2.0 modems ranging very slowly and wen it go Online the internet if very slow.and i tested with 3.0 modems 16x4 the ranging is normal but when i test the internet maximum go 200MB download. the upload is good the configfile is unlimted bandwidth..I have tested with no other modem conected on linecard and is same problem

A D2.0 modem reaches 45/2Mbps,
a 16x4 D3.0 modem reaches 720/104 Mbps, and
a 24x8 D3.0 modem reaches 920/155 Mbps with my configuration.

Your config says: 64MHz +/- 3.2MHz/2, thus your upper limit is 64MHz + 1.6MHz = 65.6MHz, which is above the limit.
The CMTS won't prevent such configuration, but modems might not come online.
Anyways your upstream frequency configuration doesn't look consistent throughout the configured fiber-nodes

It really doesn't matter whether I use a 5x1G or a 1x10G SPA for my Uplinks....

8x4 modems need their DS channels to be contiguous frequencies.
Some of your bonding groups are not setup this way eg 5/0/4:0

(16, 24, 32 tuner modems don't have his same limitation)

Other misc feedback :

* Some of your DS bonding groups are duplicates and thus should probably be removed
eg
5/0/2:0 is a duplicate of 5/0/0:2
5/0/2:1 is a duplicate of 5/0/0:4. (It should probably be reprogrammed to be controller 1 and 2, rather than 2 and 3)

* some of your upstream channel frequencies look suspicious. From memory the 20x20 card can go to max 65MHz. You have some channels set to eg 64MHz center with 6.4 width, this is probably invalid

* I would recommend upstream channel width 6.4 with fallback to 3.2

* For 6.4 width I recommend mini-slot size 2, for 3.2 width I recommend mini-slot size 4

* Since you said you had DOCSIS 2.0 and 3.0 modems (so I assume no 1.1), you can change your docsis-mode from tdma-atdma to be atdma. Also then change your modulation profile from 121 (tdma-atdma) to 221 (atdma)

* it is unusual to have "no cable upstream X rate-limit"

Have a look at my configuration example: The 8x Wideband interfaces will work for any type of 8x4 modem (as long as the channel frequencies of your controllers are contiguous).

There are generally these five types of 8x4 tuners:

- 2x 32MHz (this is the EPC3212)
- 2x 64MHz
- 2x 96MHz
- 1x 96MHz
- Fullband

Thus the least common denominator is a single 96MHz wide block you can choose 2x4 downstreams for for 8x4 modems from.
Also you need to assure that your primary channels are only within this 96MHz wide block.
That's one of the reasons my configuration is fairly restrictive on usage of primary channels.
