Hello,
being new in HFC network and DOCSIS world, I was wondering if there is a way to assign to CMs IPs form different pool of addresses based on different locations in a HFC network.
More specific: we have a CMTS with an external DHCP attached to a HFC distribution network. For troubleshooting purpose I would like creating pool of address for each specific location (subnetting) and have CMs assigned an IP address based on the location where they are. That would make my life easier to detect the location of a faulty CM in the network.

I guess your provisioning system could give each CM a static IP from a pool allocated per node

Not sure if there is a lot of point though

Your provisioning or billing system is typically going to know which node a modem is from, so its easy enough to do reports based on that back end data without needing the CM IP to be tied to a particular subnet

I reckon its best to avoid extra complexity in IP addressing wherever possible

CMTS sees the "creasy" modem shooting to much dB, it knows his name (its MAC address) but doesnt tell me where it is. (IPs all in same network).
I was thinking: Is there a way to "tag" its MAC address with some information that tells me the location so it is easy to find the modem ?

When you activate a modem,

When you activate a modem, typically you would record the service location into your provisioning/billing system.

There is nothing stopping the user from unplugging their modem and reconnecting elsewhere within the mac-domain / node, you wont be able to detect this. It isn't like DSL where you could look up the DSLAM port ID to accurately know the location of the modem.

But really, it isn't something to be worried about :

If you need to do a service call then you would just look up the end-user location and contact details from your provisioning/billing database. Users who are requesting a service call aren't going to have shifted their modem to another location.

If you have somehow lost track of who owns the modem, then fancy IP subnetting isnt going to help locate it. Best bet would just be remotely disable the modem and wait for the user to call up.

Same with if a user is somehow abusing the system, best bet is to remotely disable their modem.
