Systems Test Engineer

Job Description:
This position is for a Customer Support / System Test Engineer for Thomson cable product lines. This Engineer is responsible for all aspects of day to day customer technical support with major cable operator customers, with a focus on our new VoIP telephony products. Position interacts directly with cable operator test, evaluation, installation and network management engineers and technicians daily, as well as Thomson's product development community. This role is critical as it involves direct daily interaction with our customers' technical resources at all levels, and these individuals are typically the decision-makers in certification for ultimate product purchasing. This person will be most closely aligned to support VoIP technical issues troubleshooting during MSO certfications, field trials, and deployments. This position is required to faciliatate Thomson revenue plans to increase the business in new product areas, specifically VoIP. Position may require 30% travel. This position has the opportunity to grow into a group management position in the next few years. The ideal candidate would have a significant career background in telephone industry testing, a later transition into cable, and an ambition to grow into a supervisory/management role.

Education and Experience:
• Technical training in communications electronics, especially telephone systems, or equivalent work experience.
• 5+ years experience in telephony systems engineering, preferably with a cable MSO, VoIP service provider or equipment manufacturer.
• Hands-on experience installing and configuring PacketCable system elements, such as CMTS, CMS, KDC, MGC, Provisioning Server.
• Familiarity with DOCSIS a plus.
• Familiarity with Thomson/RCA specific cable modem models and technical history, and the Thomson cable modem program organization and practices, a distinct plus.
• Customer service experience and skills in a CATV industry call center environment a plus.

Knowledge and Skills:
• Diverse system level knowledge of protocols and practices used in cable systems providing telephony services.
• These include protocols such as TCP, UDP, ARP, DHCP, SNMP, TFTP, FTP, HTTP, ToD, IPSec, Kerberos, SIP, NCS, DNS as well as popular CODECs and POTS. Knowledge of PacketCable specifications a plus.
• Project management skills, diagnostic test tools knowledge and operating experience, excellent communications skills.
